Mission and Purpose

Mountain Lakes Rowing Club is organized to charitably support, promote, and encourage the sport of rowing and facilitate and enable participation in rowing athletic events benefiting the youth rowers of Morris County. Mountain Lakes Rowing Club intends to operate as a qualified amateur sports organization in the sport of rowing. Mountain Lakes Rowing Club has identified a need for its charitable services in northwestern New Jersey, where the sport of rowing is not well developed.

Mountain Lakes Rowing Club was organized in 2008, as a successor to Mountain Lakes Crew Club, an organization started by Jordan Ansell, then a junior in high school, upon his transfer to Mountain Lakes. It’s purpose is to run a youth rowing program for young men and women ages 14-18 or High School students who reside in Morris County, New Jersey. For the 2008 Spring Season (March 1 to June 15), Mountain Lakes Rowing Club has operated a rowing programs on Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey and has attended 5 regattas under the auspices of the US Rowing association. In 2008 the Club had 32 athletes (20 girls and 12 boys) who were part of the program. The Club included athletes from Mountain Lakes, Boonton Township, Boonton, Randolph, Morristown, Mendham and West Milford.

Mountain Lakes Rowing Club has entered novice, JV and Varsity youth teams (as the terms are defined by US Rowing) in regattas sanctioned by US Rowing. For the 2008 Spring Season Mountain Lakes Rowing Club participated in the US Rowing Youth Regional Qualifying tournament. In addition it competed in the Mercer Lake Sprints (Mercer, NJ), William & Sarah Cooper Regatta (Camden NJ), Long Island Championships (Oyster Bay, NY), and the Mayor’s Cup (Providence RI).

Mountain Lakes Rowing Club has hired Liz Ponder and Laura McDaniel as coaches for the 2008 season. Both have extensive rowing experience, rowing for Minnesota and USC, and coaching.  At the present time the Club runs only a spring season, concurrent with high school spring sports.

Mountain Lakes Rowing Club conducted a rowing educational program in march of 2008, an may run additional programs in the fall of 2008through collaboration with the Mountain Lakes Recreation Commission. These programs are presented by the athletes who are part of the youth program. Mountain Lakes Rowing Club intends provide assistance to any other non profit corporation wishing to establish amateur rowing programs in Morris County, and has identified a collaboration opportunity with Unity Rowing, a club to be established in Dover, NJ by a former athlete of the Club.

Mountain Lakes Rowing Club supports its activities through program tuition fees, membership fees for other interested individuals, and raises funds from the general public. Mountain Lakes Rowing Club also accepts donations of rowing equipment. The club conducts a general fund raiser in the Fall, and a Row-a-thon in the spring.

Mountain Lakes Rowing Club expects that, in several years, it will be in a position to organize and run US Rowing sanctioned regattas for youth and adult rowing competition. In the long term, Mountain Lakes Rowing Club may also develop facilities (for example a boat house) necessary to expand further the sport of rowing in northwestern NJ.
